Heart of Valor: Storm · Book I

Elder Tobias Vane

Ancient Runes & History · Secret Mentor

Overview

Elder Tobias Vane is the oldest member of the Ivory Spire's faculty and the one most likely to already know what a new student is before they've sat through their first lecture. He teaches Ancient Runes and History — two subjects the Spire considers foundational and largely ignores in practice, which suits him perfectly. It means his classroom is quiet, his student numbers are small, and the institution pays him almost no attention at all.

He has been waiting for Relis Stormborn for thirty years. Not her specifically, but what she represents — the person the Heart of Valor would eventually call. He recognized Kaelen's Pulse in her the moment she arrived, and he has been carefully, patiently building her toward a picture she can only see part of at any given time. He does not push. He has learned, over a very long life, that the things worth knowing arrive on their own schedule.

He is the only faculty member at the Spire who is entirely unconcerned with what Relis's presence means for the institution. He is concerned with what it means for the world.

Appearance

Vane is extremely old — the kind of old that stops being measured in years and starts being measured in patience. His beard is translucent white, his movements carry the slow deliberation of old parchment being carefully unfolded. Faint golden runic tattoos mark his skin, old enough that most people who notice them assume they are decorative. They are not.

He wears layered moth-eaten wools in muted earth tones, carries a petrified wood staff topped with a rough, unpolished amber stone, and moves through the Spire's gleaming geometric corridors as though they were built around him rather than the other way around.

Elder Vane's petrified wood staff topped with unpolished amber glowing faintly gold, ancient runes carved along the shaft.
His staff. The runes predate the Spire itself.

Personality & History

Vane's core motivation is to observe hidden truths and quietly guide those who carry them — without forcing the pace, without showing his hand, and without ever giving someone more of the picture than they are ready to hold. He has spent thirty years sitting with a prophecy most people at the Spire do not know exists, and he is not in any hurry to misuse it now that its moment has arrived.

He knew Kaelen Stormborn when Kaelen was a young man on the Northern Wall. He recognized the same quality in Kaelen that he now recognizes in Relis — the rhythm of someone whose magic does not fit the Spire's classification system, and who will eventually be pushed toward something the system cannot follow them into. He tried to help Kaelen. The record of what happened after that is not something he discusses.

He speaks softly, measuredly, and with a quality of quiet humor that often sounds as though his stories began before he opened his mouth. He is comfortable with silence in a way that most people find unsettling and Relis finds, for the first time in four years at the Spire, genuinely restful.

Role at the Spire

Officially, Vane teaches Ancient Runes and History — the pre-Consolidation texts, the fragmented record of the Thalor civilization, and the runic systems that predate the Spire's own magical framework by centuries. Unofficially, he is the one person at the institution who holds the longest view of what is actually happening to Sorvane, and who has been quietly building a bridge between that view and the person who will eventually need to cross it.

He provided Relis with the Occlusion technique — the ability to run two frequency registers simultaneously, masking her true output behind a surface pattern the Spire can read. He gave her the pre-Consolidation texts the official curriculum does not acknowledge. He gave her the map to the Vault of Echoes. Each of these came at the right moment, not a moment before, because he has learned that timing is the difference between a gift and a burden.

The archives. He has been sitting with this knowledge for thirty years.
