Overview
Alric Stormborn is a Guardian of the Northern Wall and Relis's older brother — the person who put the family ring in her palm at the Wall's edge before she left for the Spire, and told her the south had the gold but she had the mountain. He is twenty-two years old and has already spent years holding one of the most dangerous postings on Sorvane's frontier, which tells you most of what you need to know about him.
He is Relis's emotional center — not because he tries to be, but because he is the one person in her life who has consistently believed in her completely without trying to change what she is. His letters across four years at the Spire are the spine of her connection to home: funny and careful and rigorously honest in a way that made her trust everything he said. Which is why four months of silence was the most frightening thing he had ever done.
He went northeast from Corven's Pass following evidence of rune suppression along the Wall. He has not returned. His last confirmed location places him alive six weeks before the end of Book I. His fate is unresolved.
The south has the gold. You have the mountain.
Alric Stormborn, to Relis at the Wall's edge
Appearance
Alric has light blond hair, wind-tousled and tied loosely back — the hairstyle of someone who spends most of their time outdoors and has stopped fighting the weather about it. His features are warm, his hands calloused in the specific way of someone who has been doing real physical work since they were old enough to carry a weapon. He wears Guardian armor inscribed with practical runes — not decorative, not ceremonial, each one worn smooth at the edges from use.
He radiates the kind of easy warmth that some people mistake for softness. They are wrong. He is one of the Northern Wall's most capable Guardians, and the warmth and the capability are not in tension — they come from the same place.
Personality & History
Alric's core motivation is to believe in people completely and to protect them without controlling them — a distinction he understands at a level most people spend their whole lives missing. He drilled field protocol into Relis when she was twelve not because he thought she needed controlling, but because he understood that protocol keeps people alive, and he intended her to stay that way.
He speaks in an encouraging rather than forceful tone and radiates easy warmth in a way that makes people around him feel steadier without being able to say exactly why. He is not performing calm. He is calm — the kind that comes from having made peace with what the Wall requires of him and deciding to show up for it anyway, every day, without complaint.
He is the person Relis measures every other relationship against. Not consciously, not as a standard she applies deliberately — just as the baseline of what it feels like when someone is genuinely in your corner without an agenda attached.
The Northern Wall
The Northern Wall is ancient functional stone etched with matte-black Guardian runes, running across the cold highlands of the Northern Continent above Oakhaven. It is the frontline defense against the Horde — and the Horde, recently, has become something different from what it was. It moves with terrifying synchronization now. It is searching for something.
Alric went northeast from Corven's Pass following evidence of rune suppression — sections of the Wall's Guardian rune network going dark in a pattern that does not correspond to any natural decay or Horde attack. Someone, or something, is suppressing them deliberately. He went to find out what. He sent no word back.
