Region One

Northern Wilderness & Pulse-Corrupted Threats

The creatures of the Northern Continent carry the scar of ancient Pulse corruption. Most are not simply predators — they are warnings.

A Shardwolf — gaunt lupine form with glowing corrupted Pulse-stone spines

Shardwolves

Pulse-Corrupted Pack Predator

Near dead zones and the Ashen Crossing

Oversized, gaunt lupine frames with patchy ash-grey fur. Jagged, blue-violet glowing corrupted Pulse-stone pierces through their spines. Pupil-less, burning eyes.

They move in perfectly synchronized adaptive motion — not the loose coordination of a natural pack, but something closer to a single organism wearing many bodies. Each individual tracks a different angle; together they cover all of them.

Linked Nervous System Their shared neural connection can be disrupted by frequency interference — a weakness the Shard Bearers may learn to exploit.

"They share a linked nervous system that can be disrupted by frequency interference."

A Veil Owl — featureless face, massive light-absorbing eyes

Veil Owls

Nocturnal Watcher

Forest edges — especially near the Deep Pine

Large twilight-colored plumage. A featureless, completely smooth face with no facial disc — just oversized, light-absorbing black eyes. Throat feathers ripple geometrically when mimicking sounds.

Silent and rarely aggressive. They observe. The danger is not what they do — it is what they repeat. A Veil Owl mimics fragments of sounds it has absorbed: footsteps, voices, names. It does not understand what it repeats. It only knows it draws things closer.

"You hear your name… but only once."

A Grave Elk — massive pale elk with glowing translucent antlers

Grave Elk

Large Herbivore

Open woodland — near northern routes

Massive — over seven feet at the shoulder. A dusty, ash-shedding pale coat. Antlers made from semi-translucent material that pulses with an internal silver-white glow, resonating with nearby magical fields.

The Grave Elk is not a predator. It is a living instrument. Their antlers resonate with magical fields — Pulse disturbances, corrupted zones, approaching Shard energy. They graze until something changes in the air. Then they run.

"If they run, something bad is coming."

An Ironhide Boar — rusted iron-furred boar with glowing rune-scarred hide

Ironhide Boar

Territorial Brute

Forest edges and lowlands

Squat and heavily muscled with rusted-iron bristly hair. Living armor skin etched with glowing, rune-like striations. Blackened, shattered-scythe tusks.

Charges threats and never retreats. The rune-scarred hide is not decoration — it naturally resists magic. Spells destabilize and lose cohesion against its skin. Whatever scarred those runes into the creature did it a very long time ago, and it held.

Magic Resistance Their rune-scarred hide naturally resists and disrupts magical attacks.
An Ash Raven — matte-black corvid that casts no shadow, soot trailing from its wings

Ash Ravens

Scavenger Swarm

Everywhere the Horde has passed

Sleek, oversized, matte-black corvids that cast absolutely no shadows. They drop fine soot in flight. Jagged, heavily scarred beaks.

They are Pulse-sensitive and gather where death occurs. The detail that makes them truly unsettling: they consistently arrive before the event. Not after — before. They circle empty ground. Then the ground stops being empty.

"If they're circling… something already went wrong."

A Whisper Stag — mouthless ethereal stag with shifting camouflage coat

Whisper Stags

Elusive Spirit-Beast

Deep Pine interior

Ethereal, impossibly slender with a shifting grey-green camouflage coat. No visible mouth — just an unbroken, velvet-like muzzle.

Avoids direct contact but emits a low tonal hum from somewhere inside its chest — a frequency that manipulates thought and emotion without the listener realizing it is happening. The sensation is gradual. First: calm. Then: the realization that you should not feel calm here.

"You feel calmer… then realize you shouldn't be."

An Empty Man — humanoid figure in rotting clothes, face frozen and unblinking

Empty Men

Unclassified

Deep Pine and Greywoods

Humanoid silhouettes in rotting traveler's clothes. Skin resembles pale, petrified wood. Faces are horrifyingly static — slack jaws and clouded, unblinking eyes.

They wander slowly, mimicking human posture — the gait of someone who walked a long road and forgot to stop. They register as zero Pulse presence, which means no magical sense detects them. They look like survivors until they don't blink.

"They look like survivors… until they don't blink."

A Glass Serpent — translucent glass-chitined constrictor with visible internal organs

Glass Serpents

Subterranean Predator

Dry, cracked lands near the crossings

Ten to fifteen foot constrictors encased in segmented, semi-translucent, glass-like chitin that reveals pulsing dark internal organs. Smooth, polished-quartz wedge heads.

Moves beneath the soil and strikes upward. The chitin segments naturally refract light and magic — spells aimed at it scatter off at wrong angles. The strike comes from below, without warning, from ground that looked solid a moment before.

Light & Magic Refraction Their glass-chitin body naturally refracts both light and magical attacks, making targeting unreliable.
Dissonance Moths — hand-sized pale moths with silvery dust distorting the air around them

Dissonance Moths

Swarm Insect

Near unstable Pulse zones

Hand-sized pale moths with jagged wings covered in silvery dust that distorts the air around them like a heat wave. In swarms, the visual static becomes physically painful.

They are attracted to active magic. Individually harmless. In swarms, they emit a chaotic frequency that disrupts and complicates spells mid-cast — not blocking them, but fragmenting them, sending them in unexpected directions. A mage in a swarm is a mage who cannot trust their own hands.

Spell Disruption Swarms emit a chaotic frequency that fragments spells mid-cast and creates painful visual static.

Region Two

The Horde

From the Dead Wastes and the ruins of the Eastern Kingdoms. They do not roar. They converge.

The Hollowed — bruised ash-skin hive-mind infantry with burning blue-violet eyes, moving in perfect formation

The Hollowed

Pulse-Corrupted Hive-Mind Infantry

Northern Continent — pushing south

Bruised ash skin over dense muscle. Rusted scrap iron bolted directly to boiled hide. Burning blue-violet eyes.

The Horde has existed since the fall of the East — historically disorganized, roaming warbands. Something has changed. They have become terrifyingly synchronized, moving in gear-like formation, commanded by a frequency most people cannot hear. They do not break ranks. They do not act as individuals. When they charge, they do not scream.

Hive-Mind Synchronization Commanded by a sub-audible corrupted Pulse frequency. Gear-like formation movement. No individual will, no individual weakness.

"They don't scream when they charge. They just hit the ground with the exact same bone-rattling thud."
